SCLAD's housing initiatives seek
to make available barrier-free housing that is affordable to individuals with
disabilities and their families. SCLAD is a Community Housing Development
Organization (CHDO), certified as such by the City of Hialeah, Miami-Dade County
and the Florida Housing Finance Corporation. Its first barrier-free, affordable
housing project, Park Place located in Hialeah, Florida was inaugurated in
February 1998. It is a 34 unit, one and two-bedroom rental complex.
Additionally, SCLAD keeps up to date on information regarding the availability
of accessible housing locally in order to facilitate accessing it by its
customers.
SCLAD works with housing
developers to assist them in complying with Fair Housing Act accessibility
requirements. This helps to insure that housing projects are constructed
barrier-free and with the number of accessible units required by law. It also
provides information on accessibility requirements to individuals, and to public
and private entities that wish to make their premises accessible.
SCLAD, through this program, generates affordable,
barrier-free housing and housing opportunities for low and moderate income
families and individuals, placing emphasis on those with physical disabilities
(including vision and hearing impairments), especially wheelchairs users.
